In Response to the recent NY Times article, “Doulas, a Growing Force in Maternity Culture, Seek Greater Acceptance”, by Anemona Hartocollis February 10,2015

The more I see this article posted, the more disappointed I feel. As a birth doula who has started and directed both hospital based, and private birth and postpartum doula programs, with 16 years of experience, over 900 births attended, and 20 some odd years as a massage therapist and holistic healthcare professional, I have to say this is not one of my favorite doula articles. I am not thrilled about hearing doulas compared with the doorman or Amazon prime. I am also not happy with the way...

Just Let Go

We discover we are pregnant, and in an instant, our life and the whole world has changed. From that day forward we learn a certain lesson in letting go that nothing can teach us quite like being a mother, or quite the same way our children do. What are your personal perceptions of pregnancy, your upcoming labor and birth, and your impending transition into motherhood? During labor, negative perceptions cause unfavorable physical consequences. The thoughts we...

We make birth preference outlines, which are more flexible, and which we realize are not set in stone and can change, just like life and birth, which are living and dynamic processes, and for which change is normal. We don’t create rigid plans that have to then be hypervigilantly guarded against, lest someone should try to make changes to them. Instead, we use our birth planning session as an opportunity to help...

The Beauty and Necessity of Vulnerability in Birth

The Beauty and Necessity of Vulnerability in Birth

Our American culture loves sensationalism and loves to scare women about childbirth. Women who have already given birth can be experts at zeroing in on unsuspecting and unfortunate others, whose blossoming bellies they take as an invitation to recount their carefully crafted birth horror stories. Even family members, friends, and coworkers jump on the scarey birth story band wagon and relate not only their fear conjuring stories, but their idea of “the only right way” to give birth. The media...
